Permanent makeup immediately before a beach, cruise, resort or outdoor vacation is usually poor timing. Fresh brows, lips and eyeliner need protection from swimming, heavy sweating, steam and direct sun. They may also look darker, brighter or flaky in the first travel photos.
For a trip centered on water or sun, schedule the initial appointment at least three weeks before departure. Four to six weeks is more comfortable when possible because it allows the most visible healing to pass. If the trip is sooner, waiting until you return is often the better choice.
The safest planning window
Book 4–6 weeks before the trip when you want time for visible healing, unexpected schedule changes and the color to begin settling. Three weeks may be workable for many clients if the trip does not begin with intensive sun, swimming or spa activities.
Do not schedule the initial appointment days before departure. Texas aftercare guidance advises minimizing sun exposure and discourages swimming for at least two weeks after tattooing. Your artist may give a longer protected period based on the service and healing.
Why beaches and pools are a problem
Ocean water, pools, hot tubs and repeated soaking expose fresh skin to moisture, chemicals and environments that are not compatible with early healing. Saunas and steam rooms add heat and moisture, while heavy exercise adds sweat and friction.
A waterproof bandage or extra ointment is not a substitute for following aftercare. Plan the appointment around the trip rather than trying to make fresh PMU vacation-proof.
Sun can affect healing and fading
Direct sun is avoided during healing, and long-term UV exposure can speed fading. Hats and shade are useful, but you should not rub sunscreen into skin that has not reached the stage your artist has cleared for it.
After the area is fully healed, consistent sun protection helps maintain the result. For brows, Frenkel PMU House recommends SPF 50 around the healed area.
Plan for how the service looks in photos
Brows begin darker, lips can be bright or swollen, and eyeliner can look stronger in the first days. Flaking and temporary unevenness may occur during the first 10–14 days.
If the trip includes a wedding, reunion or professional photographs, use the 4–6 week window rather than aiming for the shortest possible healing time.
What about the touch-up?
The perfecting touch-up is scheduled 4–12 weeks after the initial PMU appointment. It does not have to happen before your vacation. It may be easier to complete the initial healing, travel and schedule the touch-up after you return while still inside the recommended window.
Remember that the touch-up starts another healing period. Do not place it immediately before a second trip with pools, sun or sweat.
Special timing for lip services
Lip blush and dark lip neutralization can involve swelling, flaking and a temporary light stage. If you have a history of cold sores, disclose it before booking and speak with your physician or medical provider about preventive advice.
Dark lip neutralization usually requires multiple sessions. Plan it as a series rather than expecting the entire process to be complete before one event or vacation.
When waiting is the right decision
Wait until after your trip if you leave in less than three weeks, plan to swim or sunbathe, have a spa-heavy itinerary, cannot follow cleaning instructions or need the area to look fully settled for photographs.
A delayed appointment is better than spending the vacation worried about protecting fresh permanent makeup.

Can I get permanent makeup one week before vacation?
